Cyclone Freddy

March 2023

Providing food to communities in Mozambique cut off by flooding…

Outreach report

Cyclone Freddy affected Mozambique and Malawi in February and March 2023. It was a deadly storm with flooding, loss of homes, crop destruction, and contaminated water. Freddy was the longest-lasting cyclone since records began.

Mercy Air South Africa along with ASAM Ministries in Chimoio, Mozambique, and Rise Against Hunger and Crisis Response Network, both in South Africa flew in food and aid to the Shire Basin area along the powerful Zambezi River. As you can see, homes were flooded or completely washed away. Food was scarce and clean water was needed.

We were donated 2 tonnes of high energy emergency food we flew into the flood area. Our helicopter spend almost a full month in Malawi and flew almost 100 hours in Disaster response.

We are so grateful to the donors who paid for this flying. The victims of Cyclone Freddy thank you.
